Good First Impressions: The Home Page

imageThe home page of your website is like a first interview for a new job, except you’re dealing with potential customers. Making a good first impression is imperative, but if you say too much — or not enough — then you’ve potentially ruined a business relationship, as people often visit websites before visiting, calling or e-mailing. If your home page is confusing, they aren’t likely to peruse further. They might even believe your entire business operates in a confusing, disordered way.

Looks like Twitter may have finally caught up to other social networks that have been doing this for a while now. Most recently, with Facebook who introduced cover photos with Timeline a year ago, and before that, something Myspace had for quite a while. Now Twitter can say they have cover photos too.

Boy, how the Internet has changed in the last 10 years

I don’t think there is anything more appropriate for illustrating how the Internet has evolved in the past ten years than an animated .gif graphic. Instagram may finally be building website profiles

If there is one thing that everyone can agree on that is a lacking about Instagram is that it’s missing an official website for it’s users. Since Instagram was built specifically for mobile, iPhone first then later released on Android, there is no official website for users to display their photos.

Use Tilt to view web pages in 3D

This is an oldie but a goodie. I saw the release of Tilt last year, which is a Firefox addon. Tilt allows users to view any web page and spin, turn and tilt it with a three dimensional view. If you double click on any of the 3D nodes, you can view the element information which is helpful as well. But just for the sake of seeing a web page in 3D is pretty cool.

10 hellish client responses that will make you giggle

Being a freelance designer can be a rocky road to go down. Outside of having the appropriate skills to get the job done; you have to take the idea of some stranger who may or may not know what they want, who probably has little to no design ability and turn it into a masterpiece that they have always dreamed of, for the lowest possible cost — with that cost being free of charge of course. Not to mention quite often you have to deal with not-so-smart individuals.

N. Korea’s website was built with $15 and an American design template

The United States and North Korean relationship has been tumultuous, with a recent and big flare up when North Korea decided to launch a ‘satellite’ into space. The U.S. firmly suspected that N. Korea was launching a missile into space, which could be positioned to hit many countries including the U.S., saying the launch was a direct threat to the U.S. North Korea, not really giving an eff, launched anyways, and failed miserably.

For years it has been debated that code can be stolen, therefore if it can be stolen, you can be prosecuted for stealing other peoples code or work in a court of law. Also in a similar token, if you can steal code, then it should be able to be copyrighted. In a recent court ruling, this may have all changed.
