The Knight Foundation which runs it’s annual Knight News Challenge is doing it a little differently this year. This year’s challenge submissions are being held via the social blogging platform Tumblr.
In some news that I will categorize as awesome coming out of the LA tech scene, former Myspace CEO Mike Jones announced yesterday his new startup called Science Inc. Jones describes Science Inc as a technology studio for startups looking to grow in Los Angeles.
Fortune just published their annual Top 40 under 40 list of entrepreneurs and business people. 11 of the 40 are in technology such as Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Facebook who tops the list. Some other not surprising names are Larry Page CEO of Google and Jack Dorsey Executive Chairman of Twitter. Facebook and Twitter are also two of the Top 10 Paying tech companies whose average employee salary is over $100K.
The winner of TC Disrupt 2011 is a cool start-up called Shaker that turns the most popular social network Facebook into a virtual reality where you can meet new people, listen to music, dance and have fun — all on Facebook.
Foundation is a new site dedicated to a monthly video series of interviews with the founder of Digg Kevin Rose talking to influential founders in the tech community. There are a few videos up already with Jack Dorsey co-founder of Twitter, Chris Sacca who is a start-up investor and founder of Lowercase Capital, Dennis Crowley co-founder of Foursquare and more.
I can’t believe this is real. If you thought fight club was just a movie, you’re wrong. If you think that the geeks in Silicon Valley are only about the interwebs and start ups, you’re wrong about that too. This is a story about a real life fight club with real life people letting out aggression and stress of every day life in a cold looking garage with each other going toe to toe. You do have to give them some credit, how many people would really do this if given the opportunity? It’s also sort of comical if you relate this to the Fight Club movie. The similarities are uncanny. It also reminds me of the movie Office Space, where they put the fax machine out of it’s misery; as they do with those dinosaur looking keyboards.
The White House announced a new entrepreneurship initiative today called Startup America. The new initiative is supposed to encourage entrepreneurship all over the nation. “The core goals of Startup America are to increase the number of new high-growth firms that are creating economic growth, innovation, and quality jobs; celebrate and honor entrepreneurship as a core American value and source of competitive advantage; and inspire and empower an ever-greater diversity of communities and individuals to build great American companies.”
