Using geo-tagged tweets to map out city paths

Programmer Eric Fischer who likes to map data in interesting ways just finished a new project mapping out tweets from Twitter. Using public tweets from Twitter’s API that were geo-tagged in specific cities like New York for example, he was able to map out ‘point-to-point’ trips which show the most traversed paths taken by those Twitter users.

It’s official, all three major mobile phones track your location

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by today’s news from CNET.  Microsoft is also tracking user’s locations via it’s Windows Phone 7. Although the news seems less invasive as the Apple and Google location tracking issues, it’s still something to think about.  It is reported that Microsoft is sending off via WI-FI data dumps of user locations that has a unique device ID and provides the user’s exact latitude and longitude.  The data appears to not be saved and is simply transmitted.  CNET did reach out to Microsoft for an official statement but they hadn’t heard back by the time the story was published.

In NYC, April 16th has been declared Foursquare Day

No, this is not a joke and yes, this is a real holiday.  Mike Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City has officially declared that April 16 will be Foursquare Day.  The proclamation is in honor of all the startups in the NYC area that are “thinking big, creating new jobs, and leading the global economy.” This includes of course Foursquare.  This is the first social media holiday of it’s kind.  This also opens the doors for additional holidays.  I am thinking that Tumblr is in NYC, so they need a holiday too!  Since Bloomberg is the Mayor of NYC, does this make him the official Mayor of Foursquare?
