In a new promotional video from Twitter, they are touting how fast the status update service is, pushing the message that Twitter is the place to check in times of emergency or where you would want to go for the fastest news. As we already know, everyone turned to social media during the recent earthquake on the East Coast so Twitter is taking advantage of that to give themselves a bit of a pat on the back.

The speed and reach of tweets during the DC area earthquake

When the 5.9 earthquake hit the DC region yesterday, many turned to social media to spread the word. In particular, Twitter saw heavy and fast usage right after the earthquake on the East Coast. Within one minute of news of the earthquake, tweets from the DC region were sent all over the nation. Twitter posted an official visualization showing just how fast the news spread on Twitter, which is quite impressive.

Historic DC area earthquake has people turning to social media

Earlier today there was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the DC region, the epicenter was in Mineral Virginia to be exact which was felt all over the East Coast. I live right outside of DC and work in the city and felt the earthquake today which was a very surreal experience.

Historic 8.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan (Updated)

In the early hours of today a record breaking 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit the northeast coast of Japan. This is still a developing story as a Tsunami has already hit Japan due to the quake and there is a Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others.
