UK Govt cracks down on celebrity promotional tweets

Many celebrities are facing possible litigation by the Office of Fair Trade (OFT) in the UK because of their tweets to promote products via their Twitter accounts. If a celebrity (or anyone for that matter) is tweeting, blogging or posting online a product they are being paid to endorse and are not disclosing this information it is deceptive under fair trading laws according to the OFT.

“Online promotional activity, just like any other promotional activity, must clearly identify when promotions and editorial comment have been paid for, so that consumers are not misled” says the OFT.
