Flash is dead - Adobe ventures into the Mobile Era

Today comes a big announcement from Adobe. Adobe is most widely known for it’s Flash product, where you can see many games and videos on websites all over the Internet built using it. Anyone that has ever used an Apple mobile product (iPhone, iPod, iPad) knows that Flash doesn’t work on them. This has been a somewhat long battle between Adobe and Apple with Apple not wanting Flash being used on it’s mobile products. The reasons are many, which Steve Jobs covered in an open letter to Apple users and Adobe last year.

In summary, the reason that that Apple doesn’t want to use Flash is because HTML5 is a better open source platform to build on for mobile use vs. Flash being a closed product only good for PC use which Jobs’ referred to as the “PC Era”.

Well a year has passed and it appears the Adobe finally has caved into the Mobile Era and is now going to be offering an alternative to Flash called Adobe Edge which is built using HTML5. As described in the press release today Adobe Edge is a new web motion and interaction design tool that allows web designers to create websites using standards likes HTML, JavaScript and CSS, which is exactly what Steve Jobs said he wanted in his open letter last year.
