Surprise! Facebook has over 83 million fake user profiles

Surprise! Or actually, not so much. I think we all knew it, but didn’t know to what extent. Facebook, who disclosed in thier latest public filing that 8.7% of their entire user base consists of fake Facebook accounts.

So over 83 million user profiles on Facebook are FAKE, spammers, bots, duplicates, you name it. With any network, this happens quite often. Most don’t admit to it, but it’s a common problem. I remember on Myspace, I had probably more accounts than I can count on two hands. I have a couple of Tumblr accounts, and Google+ pages, but sorry to disappoint but I only have one Facebook account! Since Facebook is public now, they have to disclose these kinds of things, which brings more light to the table. So instead of being close to hitting that one billion user milestone, Facebook may (or may not) get to it soon. Since Facebook’s latest numbers indicated a total user count of 955 million, in reality not counting fakes Facebook is at 872 million.
