The world’s first tested and working gun made from a 3D printer

3D printers are a wonderful thing. You can literally print and create objects out of nothing, with do it yourself printers from your own home. 3D printing is a new technology, but is booming in popularity simply because of anything you can print. If you don’t believe me, check out 22 objects you can print with a 3D printer. But this new object, a gun seems to be the most controversial yet.

Printed by a gun enthusiast, the world’s first working and firing gun was printed just a few days ago. The gun is an .22 pistol and was printed using a Stratasys 3D printer, and the gun printer claims he was able to test and fire off over 200 rounds from the 3D printed gun. He then modified the .22 into a .223 upper and was successful in firing off rounds on the gun without any problems other than some feed and extraction issues. With the availability of 3D printing machines and parts needed, it would be quite easy for someone with basic know how to replicate this process and create their own 3D working guns.

Given the already heightened anxiety with gun control with the recent Batman Dark Knight Rises movie theater shooting in Colorado, what are your thoughts on printing real working guns? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
