If you need to ‘avoid the ghetto’, don’t worry, Microsoft has you covered
Microsoft is currently working on an app that is hitting a bit of controversy. The Microsoft pedestrian routing app not yet named but dubbed the “avoid the ghetto app”, is supposed to be a GPS navigation assistant that uses statistics to help you find your way.
For example, if you need directions to that sporting event downtown, the app will use crime statistics, weather reports, demographics and maps to guide you using the safest route to your destination. Naturally, areas with heavy crime statistics are going to be detoured.
The app is catching heat because some say it’s racist, promotes classism and reinforces stereotypes. Since this is still being patented, no app has materialized at this time. I don’t see much wrong with the idea of the app, however, maybe if they remove the demographics part it would go over a bit smoother; as there is nothing wrong with wanting to avoid a murder or two in crime ridden neighborhoods.
