Myspace announces partnership with Panasonic for Myspace TV

At CES yesterday Myspace and Justin Timberlake had a big announcement to make. Myspace in their journey to become relevant again has partnered with Panasonic to launch a new service called Myspace TV. Coming to Panasonic Viera Connect-enabled HD televisions later this year will be a full Myspace integration with their social element in another attempt to bring back users and have people communicate to each other while watching their favorite TV programs and using Myspace.

The basic idea is to share, communicate and comment with your friends while watching TV, and also peppering the service with programmatic information about the shows and friends. In addition to talking to your friends about TV shows, Myspace will have a wide array of music channels tapping into their big music and artist database.

Justin Timberlake and the folks over at Specific Media certainly talk a good game, and with the recent launch of Myspace Radio, they are covering good ground but I am not completely sold on this and if this is enough. Samsung just launched their Smart TV at CES, which to me is a much better product. You get social integration with more relevant platforms like Facebook and Twitter with the addition to revolutionary TV advancements like motion control, voice control and face recognition. Why would I want to get the Panasonic TV when I could get that?

Also, the concept of chatting with friends on the TV about the program is catchy, but I really don’t see it as being a game changer as with the Samsung Smart TV. Maybe I am just being over critical of Myspace, maybe it’s more emotion here but tell me I am wrong? Is this something that you would be interested in? Let me know in the comments below, thanks.
