Foursquare reaches a monumental one billion check-ins
A million check-ins isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion. That is what Foursquare is saying as they just reached over a billion check-ins with their location based service. That is one heck of a lot of people checking in.
Apparently check-in services aren’t going away any time soon. I don’t hear much from Gowalla these days as Foursquare is the Facebook of location based services. Even though Facebook, Twitter and now Google Plus have check-in features, they aren’t widely used as they are with Foursquare since Foursquare has a lot more benefits to the user by checking in with businesses and merchants and getting back something tangible like discounts and coupons. There is also the bragging rights of being the ‘mayor’ of that check-in location.
Facebook did try their hand with Facebook Deals for a few months this past Spring to only abandon it by the end of Summer. Google also tried with their Check-in Deals app Latitude which seemed to have failed miserably. Check-ins and Deals go well together, so it’s only a matter of time before we probably see more options pop-up in this area again. I would be surprised if at some point Google doesn’t try again but this time on the Google Plus platform.
