Disney, which owns ESPN, agreed to sell off the regional sports networks as a condition of regulatory approval of the acquisition of Fox’s film studio as well as channels like FX and National Geographic. Among the networks included in the sale is New York-based Yes, which is partially owned by the New York Yankees and broadcasts games of 44 teams from major sports leagues.
Amazon representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to CNBC, Amazon is joined by Sinclair Broadcast Group, TEGNA, Apollo Global Management, KKR & Co. and The Blackstone Group in the first round of bidding for the slate of sports networks. CNBC reports that the second round of bids is expected before the end of year.
The bid for the regional sports networks is the latest indication in Amazon’s live sports push. The most notable example is a two-year deal with the NFL, worth a reported $130 million, that includes streaming 11 Thursday Night Football games this season.
