The world's longest bridge in China opened today at 26.2 miles

China’s Jiaozhou Bay Bridge had it’s grand opening today. It just became the world’s longest bridge at 26.2 miles long. It’s very impressive I might add. However, if you are not fond of bridges you might have a hard time travelling across this monstrosity on a windy day.

The Pope gets all hipster on us

It looks like Pope Benedict XVI is getting his Internet on and enjoying it too. He had a press event where he was seen using an iPad and also sending out his first tweets during the launch of the Vatican Today news website. The Vatican appears to have embraced social media and sees the value in it that we all tend to and will be using Twitter and Facebook heavily now, which makes me think also of the Benedictine Monks at Portsmouth Abbey in Rhode Island who also recently entered into the digital age.

In social media, time can be of the essence (Infographic)

I have always wondered when the best time to publish was. When is my audience at it’s peak, when are most online and when can I get the most bang for my buck? Kiss Metrics answers these questions with an interesting infograph called The Science of Social Timing. It illustrates there is a prime time to reach your audience, for example 5PM EST is the best time to reach users on Twitter.

Twitter launches Twitter for Newsrooms

Twitter indiscreetly announced and launched a new resource for journalists yesterday called Twitter for Newsrooms (#TfN). The Newsrooms site is pretty much an entire guide on how to use Twitter. It appears to be a good tool to use if you are new to the world of Twitter. It goes through different resources, strategies and best practices to using the social network to make it work best for you whether you are a producer, reporter or curator. It’s definitely work checking out!

Get excited as Google catapults itself into Social with Google+

Finally Google has officially provided a clear picture into becoming not only a search giant but a social giant as well; or at least being able to compete and possibly surpass the likes of Facebook. With the announcement made today, Google is bringing together all their social pieces and putting the puzzle together into one social unit called Google+.

To put it plainly, Awesome Highlighter is well, awesome!

I try to always go by the motto: Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS). Usually when something is simple and easy to use, you get the best product. Over complicating when it comes to products and design is usually what gets you into trouble. That is why I like The Awesome Highlighter so much. Its a simple website that allows you to highlight text on a page and share that specific page with anyone on the web. After highlighting the text to share, you are given a short URL which if shared will take the user directly to that page showing that highlighted text. Beautifully simple and very useful.

Google is the first website to hit 1 billion visitors globally

Congrats to Google who is the first online web property to get to 1 billion unique visitors. It’s certainly an accomplishment that millions of websites will never get to. Surprisingly, Microsoft comes in second at 905 million total visitors. Facebook is not far behind with 713.6 million total visitors. Don’t confuse unique visits with members though. By our projections, we estimate before the 2011 year is over Facebook will reach 1 billion members.

New translation technology will allow humans to speak with dolphins

You may know already how smart dolphins are.  For example being taught how to locate mines and enemy divers. It’s been long known that dolphins are very intelligent creatures. Humans have been able to communicate with dolphins on a very basic level since the 1960’s.  As you can imagine though, communication is probably the number one road block when it comes to dealing with dolphins.

Sharing photos on Instagram is super easy

I am sure everyone has heard of Instagr.am already, the iOS social photo sharing app. I like to take photos here and there with my iPhone and after several months of use and some other photo sharing apps I have tried, I have come to the conclusion Instagr.am is my favorite. It’s probably the most popular one out there, so sharing photos and getting them seen by others is easy.

Around the web in 60 seconds (Infographic)

In 60 seconds a lot happens around the Internet, a lot more than you might imagine. For example, in 60 seconds 20,000 new posts are posted to Tumblr. Or that 98,000 tweets are sent out on Twitter.  GO-Globe came through with a kick ass infograph illustrating what happens around the Internet every 60 seconds.

Proof of concept to charge devices wirelessly with ultrasound

Just a couple of weeks ago I talked about a new patent that Apple was awarded that would allow you to charge your Apple devices wirelessly using induction charging technology. This is still a viable and demanding technology that I would like to see come to fruition. However, I just learned about an even better technology that I wanted to share.

iPad2 ad transcends boundaries of traditional news consumption

The new iPad2 commercial shows how it’s changing the way we consume news. From traditional ways such as reading a newspaper, you can now “watch” a newspaper, and so on. Apple’s new Now TV ad is pretty nice. They have one great marketing team!

How Facebook affects your life and relationships (Infographic)

From Myspace to Twitter to Tumblr, there are many social networks out there now, but none bigger than Facebook. It’s “the” social network after all. With all the users and obsessions with the site, the affects on you and your life may be harmless or end up being harmful. Online Dating University created an informative infograph of just some of the pros and cons of using Facebook.

Good Night, Internet

Ah, each night I go through this. I check all my social connections. I check my Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Myspace and RSS news feeds. Then when you think it’s safe to hit the hay for the night, you feel you missed something. So you check again, get caught up and several more hours pass by. College Humor was able to capture this feeling exactly in their new animation video. Gotta love the Internets!

Transform your favorite book into a wall poster

Through some clever artwork, Postertext will turn your favorite book into a wall poster. The poster not only shows a classic image depicting the book, but will also display the entire books text right on the poster for you to read, if you so wish. A very cool idea and probably an even better present for the reader in your life.

30 years later, the map of the DC Metro will get a redesign

Being a native to DC, the Metro (subway) is an integral part of life. I don’t ride it a lot, but have enough to appreciate all the areas it covers and the millions of passengers it carries each year. A critical piece as you can imagine is the map. The map shows you each stop-location and where it takes you in and around the city. The map has gone through some changes over time but in the past 30 years it hasn’t been completely redesigned. Now, after all this time and to integrate the new rail line to Dulles Airport, the map will be getting overhauled. Lance Wyman, the original creator of the Metro map has been commissioned to redesign it. I only hope that the new version doesn’t lose it’s simplicity that it has now.

The Internet drawn by you

The Internet is a big series of tubes…but really, what is the Internet to you? Can you draw the Internet? UK-based digital agency Saint is partnering with ArtWeLove, Deviant Art, The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and The NYC Department of Education to ask this very question. Some of the entries so far are very cool and show great talent and imagination. Here are some of my favorites.

Soon you will be able to charge your Apple devices wirelessly

Technology is great, but with greatness comes a bit of annoyance. I am talking about wires. Ever wish you could get rid of all those wires for all your devices and accessories? Apple users may soon be able to. With a new patent that Apple was awarded by the US Patent & Trademark Office, Apple will soon be able to start producing induction charging docks. Induction charging docks use inductive coils inside the dock to generate a small, oscillating electromagnetic field and transmit it through the back cover of the mobile device. This allows you to place your device on the dock and charge your device without connecting a wire directly to it.
