8 bit artwork that comes to life

Shawn Smith, an artist in Texas likes to take thousands of small wooden blocks and create nature themed 8 bit art. The process is very intensive as he has to first conceptualize the art, design it, then cut each wooden piece by hand and paint each “pixel”. Then he has to glue each block pixel into place to create the final piece. The results are very interesting.

Filmed in December 2010 and January 2011, this Tron Legacy video documents the making of a stunning 65 foot mural in Shoreditch London, England painted by “Probs” with End of the Line. The piece was commissioned by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures (UK) in December 2010.

Biking plus art equals some really cool illustrations

What happens when you get a hardcore mountain biker that appears to have an obsession with drawing bikes as much as they like riding them? You get some really cool and strange illustrations of your favorite icons on bikes.

Time lapse video: A very large telescope

I am sure that anyone that follows my blog knows that I love time lapse videos. Here is a new one that is really cool and looks like a scene straight out of Star Wars. What makes this special is the video is shot at the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile’s Atacama Desert and shows laser beams generated from a telescope which is sent to the atmosphere to produce artificial stars. This is used for real time measurements against other stars and distortions that show up on the imaging.

The Screen Trap video

I don’t know how this happened but this little guy seems to have gotten himself stuck on-screen, literally. I really like this video, as it’s quite imaginative and the little guy goes from one device screen to another until well, he goes offline.  It’s too bad he didn’t have the Verizon iPhone, maybe he could have been saved!

Iran to build their own Internet

As if the World Wide Web isn’t enough, Iran feels the need to build their own Internet. But this isn’t to innovate, it’s to censor. According to a new report from the WSJ, Iran plans to shut down the global Internet as we know it and run their own national Internet so they can have full control and restrict anything they feel they need to. In light of the recent Middle East and North Africa protests fueled by Social Media, Iran maybe seriously thinking about taking a long term strategy to implement a statewide censorship. The new national Internet could possibly be in place in less than two years.

Canon 16M gun gives new meaning to flash photography

Someone with a very creative imagination combined a 16M Canon and a gun to make an awesome looking camera. It’s too bad it’s not a real working camera; although if you were seen using it you may get some strange looks or the police called on you.

Genius or Crazy: The Shredder Clock

There is a cliché saying out there that “time is money.” Well, someone took that saying and put it to literal use. If you don’t get up in time to turn off this alarm, any money you put in there the night before will get shredded. I tell you what though, I would never be late again with this alarm clock!

The mapping of God's bloodline

Data mining and research sometimes can be a tedious task and a bit mind boggling. But just try contemplating tracing back the entire bloodline of mankind all the way back to God. Robert Rouse did and was able to successfully trace, map and visualize the bloodline all the way back to Adam, Eve and God. Pretty amazing feat I would say he accomplished.

Spectacular long exposure airplane photos

Long exposure photography in a nutshell is the technique of capturing non-moving objects sharply while blurring moving objects in the same photo. The results can be very cool and you probably have seen this technique used many times. In this case, Terrence Change was able to capture some fascinating images of planes traveling and the trails they leave behind. Very cool!

Video of the Brammo motorcycle that TC just gave away

At the TechCrunch Disrupt, TC somewhat spontaneously (it was probably staged) decided to give away a free Brammo electric motorcycle to an audience member. The winning audience member lucked out as this bike is pretty cool. It’s not your normal bike and doesn’t boast top speeds and huge power. What it does boast is a city miles, up to 80 miles per gallon, per charge - because it’s an electric bike. The Brammo Enertia model is made for city travel and is ideal for city/urban environment. The bike retails at around $9k, so it was a nice give away for the Disrupt.

Awesome Sonic the Hedgehog flipbook animation (video)

I haven’t seen a flipbook in a long while. But they have always been something of interest. Of course it takes a lot of skills and creativity to make one this good. Check out this flipbook animation of Sonic the Hedgehog “Bloody Renegade X” by Bloody Renegade X.

The Joy of Social Media as seen through Bob Ross' eyes

Anyone that is old enough to remember Sesame Street growing up probably knows who Bob Ross is. Bob Ross was best known for his painting program that ran on PBS television for several years through the 80’s and early 90’s. Bob Ross would show you the art of oil painting typically painting beautiful landscapes in a very calm and happy go lucky voice and demeanor. Flowtown took Bob’s life lessons and applied them to social media and voilà, came up with a winning infograph!

Photo of the day: The perfect shot

This photo taken in Naples, Italy is of a plane flying over a building with the photo taken at the perfect time while the plane is passing over an open area of the building, creating the Perfect Shot. The photo is actually not one single photo, but two photos combined together. One image is of the top part of the building and the plane flying over. A second image had to be combined for the lower portion of the building since the original photo’s lighting of the bottom portion was bad quality, so two images were superimposed together.

Spam and Phishing have a lot in common

When you think of phishing and spam you might think of a really terrible dinner combo. Or you might think of email spam and phishing to get you hacked. Most people probably think of the latter, at least I hope so.

Video: Apple's 2.0 Store interactive iPad display

There was a lot of hype about the new Apple Store 2.0 retail experience and what it would entail, such as a new employee RetailMe app or maybe employee’s trying to unionize. The real news that came out of the new Apple Store 2.0 experience is that Apple is now using their own iPad tablets to display product information in stores moving forward for a better employee and customer experience. This is a big change from the past where product information was on paper displays. The new change will provide an interactive display of product info that can display more info than before, be easily updated and show comparable products.

Photo of the day: A makeshift levee

The state of Mississippi has been in high alert due to high rains and flooding the past two weeks. In particular, farmland areas have been fearing the worst when Mississippi decided to open floodgates to relieve the levee’s so that downtown areas, such as New Orleans do not get flooded. The result, some areas like Vicksburg are being flooded. So what does one do at a time like this? They build there own levee! Randy the Macho Man Savage has died!

Wow, TMZ is reporting that Randy the Macho Man Savage has died in a fatal car accident in Florida today. I am not a huge wrestling fan, but when I was a kid growing up, he was one of the main guys I would watch in the WWF. Him, Hulk and of course others.  RIP.
